The Befreiungshalle (Hall of Liberation) was erected on the Michelsberg above Kelheim following an order of King Louis I of Bavaria.
It commemorates the victories against Napoleon during the wars of liberation between 1813 and 1815.

The construction started following plans of Friedrich von Gärtner im Jahr 1842, the ceremonial opening took place on October 18, 1863. Before the original plans of the building had been altered by Leo von Klenze.
Most attention earn the 34 statues designed by Ludwig Schwanthaler and made out of white Carrara-marble, which surround the hall holding their hands.
